A Recital is a Place to Showcase "What Only You Can Do"

A recital is a place to boldly showcase what only you can do. There’s no time to be timid or teary-eyed. "Right here, in this space, you are the best at playing this piece—that’s why you’re doing it."

When I guide children onto the stage, I feel less like a piano teacher and more like an Olympic coach.

Even if you get perfect scores on tests or write a great thesis, the experience of preparing for a solo recital, the practice, the nerves, the emotions during the performance—these moments will stay etched in your body forever. You’ll always be able to recall that feeling. That’s why you must prepare thoroughly, until you can truly enjoy it.

This is something my own mentor used to tell me constantly during my university years.

As adults, what we remember isn’t the regret of "I made a mistake there…" or "I could’ve done better." Instead, we recall the practices leading up to the performance, the nerves backstage, the journey to the venue with our family, and the applause after we finished playing.

“What if I make a mistake?” So what? And the things we worry about… most of the time, they don’t even happen.  Worried about what others might think?

To my students, I always say, "Even if you make a mistake or something happens, the only ones who’ll remember are your mom and dad! It’s okay! Don’t worry about it!"

And if, by some chance, something does go wrong during the recital, I ask the parents to reassure their child by saying, "Let’s forget about it quickly. You gave it your best effort!"

After the performance, parents often come backstage with various expressions on their faces, saying, "It was so moving! You did such a great job!" as they greet their child.

Every child takes their own detours along the way. They get lost in forests of challenges, but they always make it through safely in the end, feeling a sense of accomplishment, happiness, and growth. That’s what a recital is all about.

For parents of older students, some even call it a concert, as it becomes not just a showcase of music, but also a precious time to witness their child’s growth and maturity.

Children are a continuous journey of moments.  Let’s make as many of those moments as positive as we can.
